Mudbox 2010 will have enhanced integration with Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3DS Max and Autodesk Softimage. It will also feature a range of new creative tools and workflows, and a software development kit that means it can be customized by teams and used in specific pipelines.

It will be bundled as part of the Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suites, which comprise a choice of Maya 2010 or 3DS Max 2010, together with Mudbox 2010 and Autodesk MotionBuilder 2010.

Christoph Schädl, character artist at RABCAT Computer Graphics, was a beta tester for Mudbox 2010. “I love to work with Mudbox because the intuitive user interface lets me focus entirely on my creative vision,” said Schädl. “My favorite feature in the 2010 release is the ability to paint across multiple texture maps, in different paint channels without any seams. This past August we had the chance to witness the launch of Maya 2009, the 10th major release of Maya 3D software. While it’s keeping up with the latest trends in the animation and cinematography industry, I do think that some aspects of Maya need more attention as well.

Right now, we’re seeing more and more feature films using stereoscopic images. In the past you could make these images using a handmade camera rig in conjunction with some trial and error. Maya 2009 not only gives a fully featured stereo camera, but also allows you to use a feature called “Stereo Preview”. Using this feature, you can preview your stereo scenes directly in your viewport, completely eliminating the need to test render your images or animations just to see that they work.

The stereo preview offers a variety of preview modes: anaglyph (red-cyan), horizontal interlaced, chec ... Read more »

Artists select fine watercolor papers by finish and by weight. Manufacturers generally sell three or more finishes, usually labeled Rough, Cold Press, and Hot Press.

For transparent watercolors, most artists prefer a Rough or Cold Press finish. A smoother finish, such as Hot Press, is desirable for opaque watercolors, and for printmaking and drawing.

How do I decide which board to use?

Consider three factors. First of all, are you choosing a surface only for scanning or reproduction, or do you intend to save and display the artwork itself? Secondly, do you need a smooth surface or a more textured surface? Finally, what weight should the board that backs the surface be?

What is the difference between bristol board and illustration board?

Bristol provides two working surfaces, front and back. Illustration board is only finished on one surface.

Although the two can be used interchangeably in some applications. a bristol board is usually lighter in weight and is intended for longer term use and preservation. The better quality bristol boards are archival. An illustration board is intended as a surface for creating artwork that will be scanned or reproduced onto other mediums.
