MR Area lights
Smart Date: Tuesday, 20.10.2009, 17:31 | Message # 1

I'm attempting to speed up my rendering in mental ray. I have an indoor scene of a classroom with 8 lights and two windows that bleed sunlight through them.

I was doing research and the term "area light" came up many times... What are these and how do they differ from the photometric lights?

Are you using sky portals on the windows? These are area lights.Photometric lights are also area lights in some cases.

You should check out Jeff Patten's interior lighting gnomon vid. It's cheap and very informative.

Yes. One for each windows. I also have a MR daylight system in place to provide the sunlight.

My problem is the time it takes to final gather. I need to animate this scene so I have to have noise-less accurate frames but I need them quickly (under 3:00/frame). Maybe I simply can't have my cake and eat it but I wanted to ask the community.
