In terms of creative cultural output australia has always been rather mediocre and largely because of the sentiments one see's about the Bill Henson censorship case and various affirmative postings on websites everywhere related to this subject. Basically speaking australian culture has always been dominated by somewhat reactionary conservative small time thought processes. And this form of mentality has kept our nation in a very average state of cultural achievement in all honesty.
Invariably these sort of mentalities are committed to a foreign head of state and can never ever see Australia as anything less than a colony of mother england and her cultural values.
Even the oppossing school of thought only ever see's a need to subvert this by going in direct opposition but just as negative and futile such as feminism or multiculture and goes overboard with the non-racism clause-
For example for australians to get 'culture' we've tried to import it in as multi-culture. To varying degrees of success, ie., OK so we've got lots different type food but have we as a nation created a truly significant australian cuisine out of it all. All we've done is become a clone of other nations cuisines. There's aussie italian, aussie indian, sri lankan, aussie vietnamese, Oz chinese ,french, thia, lebanese, mexican et al and the list goes on. One vast array of international food sources. Nothing that sets australian food apart from any other though.Big deal!
