Am I crazy?

Hey everyone,

I woke up this morning with some self doubts, and thought I'd throw my thoughts out here, and see what all you lovely people have to say.

I'm 19, chronically ill, unable to work, unable to get disability, love to paint. I am tentatively dipping my feet into the art world - I've gotten commissions and I have my first solo show coming up in October, at a local framing/gallery place. I have a website, and some paintings available online as prints. I'm still trying to finish high school which has prevented me from going gung ho into the business side.

This is what I want to know - is it possible for me, through hard work, to actually make a somewhat decent living from my art? Right now, I'm making next to nothing, and I still have to pay to frame all my paintings for my show (yikes) and its a bit discouraging to say the least. I'm starting to wonder if I'm crazy for even trying, but on the other hand, what other options do I even have? (none actually).

I've been reading all the threads about marketing etc, and it makes me feel somewhat optimistic, but I guess I just need a little reassurance that I'm not losing my mind.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

I think it's all about hard work and getting your name out there. It's difficult to sell yourself if you're a terrible artist, so hard work is absolutely necessary. But unfortunately the world is built so that you have to convince your viewers that you're as awesome as they might suspect you are.
The way things work right now, as an art teacher once said to me, artworks have the value that people are willing to pay for them. There's no set price and therefore an artist who's terrible, but simply good at causing trouble and getting their name heard might make a shit-ton of money, while an artist who's technically far more superior, but too quiet and modest to promote themselves right, might have to have side-jobs to support themselves.
So make sure to let your voice be heard whichever way you can, and it will be possible!
